Labor ThinkTank on Review2010

Review2010

by LaborHQ at Friday, 1 October 2010

Thank you for your contribution. This ThinkTank is now closed whilst the review panel makes it's recomendations. We will keep you updated on its progress.

Following the 2010 federal election, it is more important than ever for Labor to look at how we can improve our Party so that it continues to campaign effectively, but also represents the views and aspirations of progressive Australians.

So that we can properly do this as a Party, Australian Labor have appointed three senior leaders in the Labor Party to conduct a thorough review of the Party and to make recommendations for how we can improve our work and community connections.

You can read about the review and how to make a formal submission at the Review2010 Website.

LaborConnect will be making a submission to Review2010 and we invite all LaborConnect members to participate in that submission here at ThinkTank.

Specifically, the submission from LaborConnect will focus on the following reference points.

  • The relationship between the Party campaign and other progressive campaigns, including those of affiliated trade unions.

  • The need to review and modernise Labor’s Platform with particular reference to giving the Party a more clearly articulated vision and purpose in the 21st Century.

  • The need to improve dialogue and engagement between progressive Australians and the Party, including progressive third party organisations.

And in particular;

  • The need to broaden participation in the Party to ensure a greater say for members, supporters and stakeholders.

Your idea should be about new ways for Party members and the community to engage and participate in the modern Australian Labor Party.

What are your ideas for a modern Australian Labor?

  • Labor Community Dialogue

by CamGilchrist85 from Drummoyne , NSW at Friday, 1 October 2010

    Labor and Community

Labor believes in building stronger, more diverse and inclusive communities. Across Australia there are thousands of community organisations that play an important role in building a stronger country for us all. Community Dialogue, already established in NSW, is a new initiative that actively invites community organisations to join Labor in delivering new ideas. This proposal suggests rolling the concept out nationally. ...

  • Better online discussion platform and Nationwide(or non branch) membership

by federali from Earth , WA at Wednesday, 6 October 2010

The laborconnect website is clunky and difficult to use, which is actually preventing dynamic discussion.

Maybe this website should be restricted to actual alp members, so that right wing 'trolls' can't hijack the site (or at least have to pay the alp membership fee for the privilege). Will force people to put their real name to their comments, and dissuade people from saying outright defamatory comments.

To be honest a simple message forum...

  • Improving communication with Party Members

by seanone from kippa-ring , QLD at Monday, 11 October 2010

I have on a number of occasions sent emails to my local member, to others in government, posted comments on this site, posted ideas. What feedback have I had absolutely nothing. The local member is to busy to even reply despite my putting in hours on street stalls, all day at election including being a scrutineer. How do I feel? I feel that I am totally wasting my time, I feel that I am not valued. I feel that all of this, namely Labor Connect, B...

  • Where Now For Labor

by Diggers1854 from Fairfield Gardens , Queensland at Saturday, 2 October 2010

Having supported Labor for over forty years and been a member of the Party, I have seen many changes in the Australian Labor Party.
The 2010 Federal Election has shown that the Party has lost touch with the Rank and File Members as well as the Australian People.

    Labor as party was:
    1. One of the Centre Left in its ideology.
    2. Where all play a part in putting forward their ideas to the State and the National Conferences.
    3. Where Branch M...

  • Back to beliefs

by Alopez from Spit Junction , NSW at Tuesday, 5 October 2010

Labor needs to get back to it's true Belief's & what the party has always represented the community for. Building a strong economy for today, tomorrow & the future & when I say building a strong economy this takes into account Health, Education, Environment and all responsibilities that a govt. is accountable for. The Labor Party needs to continue doing what is right for the everyday Australian, this was shown with the changes to work...

  • NBN

by mark2010 from WILLUNGA , South Australia at Saturday, 2 October 2010

Revoke the policy of privatising the NBN when it is completed. I think it is too important and vital to this country's future to allow it to fall into the hands of big business

  • Take G.S.T off australian food products

by huffnpuff from argenton , new south wales at Friday, 1 October 2010

reduce the g.s.t. on some of our foods , and start putting more farms to grow our food instead of importing food that we can grow our self such as fruit and vegies , as we are getting food that is been in container ships for months, from other countries, we are a big country that has stopped growing our own fruit and vegies, the way we were 20 to 40 years ago , because goverment rathers import instead of home grown food

  • Labor needs to be relevant.

by Crispin from Lyneham , ACT at Friday, 3 December 2010

It is presently very difficult to articulate what Labor stands for. Right now Labor is the party of last resort, the one people vote for when they don't feel kinship with the Coalition or the Greens - it is not a brand that is actively championed.

This is particularly true among Gen Y which has bled en masse to the Greens. Young people might have been with Labor on policy, but were with the Greens on principle.

    Labor's renewal will take p...

  • Sell the message.

by rossco1955 from Sydney , NSW at Thursday, 2 December 2010

This is my first post to this forum.

I strongly believe that some of the great policies have been poorly sold.
Indeed, I believe that this was Kevin Rudd's major failure.
Few would credit John Howard with great sales skills but he DID cut through with his message. He 'sold' the electorate on a GST !
We only need to look to Hawke, Keating and Carr to for great salesmen that I am sure would help if they were simply asked to.
    With blow-hard...

  • Go Left and Democratise

by pgrealish from Moorooka , Queensland at Tuesday, 16 November 2010

The recent and continuing surge in the Green vote shows that Australians, far from yearning for the dreary days of Howardian conservatism, are seeking out genuine left and centre-left ideas and the parties that promote them. In order to save itself from losing a sizeable chunk of its progressive vote, the Labor Party must move back to the centre-left and democratise itself and its institutions.

    1. Make the State and Assistant State Secretary r...
