In the 21st century Australia's prosperity will depend on how much and how well we invest in human as much as physical capital. Labor's goal is therefore to make Australia one of the most highly educated and skilled nations on earth.

Labor has always been the party of educational opportunity. We view education as the great enabler that helps individuals achieve their full potential, that gives our industries the knowledge and skills they need to innovate and become more productive, and that promotes social mobility and social harmony. In the age of global warming, scientific education and research will be necessary to help prevent dangerous climate change.

Successive Labor governments have established and invested in education at all levels: early childhood, the primary and secondary years, vocational education and training (VET) and university education. Labor is continuing this tradition through our Education Revolution to lift the quality and equity of education at every level. It will prepare a new generation of Australians for the jobs and the world of tomorrow.

  • Performance pay for teachers

by botaglove from Lambton , NSW at Thursday, 23 June 2011

Paying teachers extra for good results is unworkable practically and philosophically. I stand to make money from it - my students do really well by any statistical measure - but I don't deserve it! I work at a Performing Arts school, where teachers, parents, outside of school performing arts groups, music and dance tutors and the students' enthusiasm are all factors in success. A policy that rewards me for what others do is hardly fair.

  • Vertical streaming

    by Julian_Wright at Friday, 10 June 2011

Pupils should be taught in classes relevant to their level of expertise and ability rather than age. This will allow the teacher to teach at one level to the whole class rather than having to pitch a lesson at the lowest ability pupil, thereby holding the rest of the class up, or teaching at a level that leaves the less able pupils behind.

Pupils would then only progess up a grade when they have secured all the necessary skils to move on.

    Education for the future
    by Shirley_Marsh at Wednesday, 24 August 2011

The following UTube presentation describes how the 'Humane' education system can impact on not only nations, but the world in general. It's quite brilliant and well worth consideration by our educators.

  • The ABC charter should be expanded to include production of a daily newspaper

by DrGeoffPain from Monbulk , Victoria at Tuesday, 2 August 2011

    Newspapers should educate.
Raging debate about the inevitable outcome of private enterprise (monopoly) in media ownership has wated an enormous amount of Australia’s time and energy. Labor must officially address it as a prime case of Market Failure requiring legislation, but more importantly intervention. As part of the process, private enterprise must be banned from Australian Government broadcast media requirements with the ABC being boosted...

  • Religious *education* instead of Scripture in schools

by Douglas from Blaxland , NSW at Friday, 29 July 2011

As a student in primary and secondary public schools, unless you opt out (usually with parent-signed permission), then you are made to attend scripture, and are taught to believe in whatever that scripture happens to be.
Wouldn't it be better that, instead of religious indoctrination getting a free ride in a supposedly secular educational system, instead to have actual religious education: to teach students ABOUT the world's main religi...

  • Fix our universites

by nickdb from Mt Nelson , TAS at Wednesday, 6 July 2011

Our universities are some of the most corrupt places on the planet. Fix that, and you will have a massive step towards improving education in this country very rapidly. Quality higher education will produce a) more of the better-qualified and capable primary and secondary teachers that we need, and b) a society better equipped to address educational issues more generally.

I suggest a university integrity commission to look at financing and at ...

  • Producing university graduates on a production line

by thetrureal from melbourne , victoria at Sunday, 19 June 2011

We have an enormous level of secondary school completion and we produce university/tafe graduates as if they come off a production line at full speed but with nowhere to go and it is ridicules/disgusting that funding is given to private schools while public schools are just rubbish dumps with overcrowded class rooms.

  • Greater investment in the maintenance and refurbishment of older public school buildings

by Beeinherbonnet from Fraser , ACT at Saturday, 11 June 2011

Repairing internal walls, repainting internal walls, repairing and/or replacing window coverings and floor coverings, renovating toilet facilities ... many public schools require the investment now, not in 3 or 5 years time.
