• Better Public Dental care

Posted: Thursday, 15 July 2010 | By: Obutters from Sydney , NSW

Tooth decay amongst children has been getting worse and thousands of men and women across the country are on waiting lists to treat painful dental problems.

So why doesn't Labor do what the UK Labour party did many years ago and ensure standard and subsidised charges for dental care under a public system. Under the NHS, Dental care is subsidised by the state and standard charges apply - for instance a standard examination is 16 pounds, a filling 45 pounds. This is much cheaper than in Australia. Why is it different charges for the same treatments always apply??

Keep Labor's plan for free check ups - but costs have got to come down to make sure people follow through on their checkup.

State governments have traditionally provided the bulk of the public funding for dental care - the federal Government could extend its dominate role of funding in health to ensure better public dental care.

Yes the public dental system is deplorable. Thankfully I have never had to suffer as some contributors to this blog have. However, please remember this Labor government has only been in office for 4 years. It can't fix everything straight away.

@samir69..are you a qualified dental practitioner? I hope not. Yes brushing will prevent some dental problems. What about plain old genetic orthodontic defects? Cranio-facial defects, peridontal infections, etc. I am hoping your PHI covers you.

I am faced with having to procure loans of up to $5000 to fix dental problems created initially by poor dental work and exacerbated by financial difficulty and now late middle age not from lack of brushing or flossing.I bet Gina R has pearly whites

I agree that this is an area where Australia really needs to lift its game & look after it's people.

Just about everyone in my family struggle when it comes to Dentistry, they can never afford it, & when it's needed, it takes more

How many people are visiting dentists because of the prohibitive cost? If cost were cheaper, dentists might actually make more money. I am sure bananas were not selling when they were $15kg, and now they are $3kg farmers may be making more money.

Dental work is ridiculously expensive in Australia. I am not sure about other western countries. How can a filling cost $250 but a visit to the doctor costs $55 or is bulk billed? Fix cost, fix the problem! In South Africa a filling costs R250 / $30!

Why is a visit to the doctor subsidised by medicare, and an expensive visit to the dentist not? Sorry, but because of this im voting for the Greens, their policy on this is better.

Have you considered cleaning your teeth?
    It's not that dificult, really!
This is the problem with dental care, it is almost 100% preventable if you just simply clean your teeth, but no, it's much better to tell political parties to spend mi

So many other health problems come from dental problems - 'a stitch in time saves nine'.
