• After Hours GP Clinics at hospitals

Often, emergency departments are full of people who have minor ailments or injuries and have nowhere else to go. They wait in emergency for hours because of a stomach bug or a broken wrist or an ear infection.

If an after hours clinic could be established on the hospital campus (and in larger cities and towns not so close to the hospital), people looking for regular medical help could get it without clogging the emergency department. Anyone who reports to the GP Clinic can be triaged, and then either treated at the clinic or sent for treatment at the emergency department. People would still be able to present at emergency straight up if they needed to.

It would certainly help families -- Mums and Dads with sick kids could get treatment when they need it without sitting in an emergency department all night -- as well as the Emergency Nurses and Doctors who can spend their time on the people who need it

It would be a great help if private xray and imageing practices were encouraged by the Government to stay open out of hours. Multiple practices in a given area could use a roster system. Injured footballers seem to access these on weekends. Feedback?

Emergency is emergency, Triage means the sickest first, but the person doing the triage is a junior nurse, it should be a junior DR. on he learn. Our Dr. would not allow you into cas. unless obviously an emergency, if not, told to go to own GP.

The emergency operation isn't the problem. The staff structure is. Because each patient is treated to an interactive presentation the star performers will always be spread over the operation. The multitasking nurse and doctor tag team is old fash

This is a fantastic idea! In a similar line of thought, simply increasing the number of bulk billing doctors will help a lot. My closest bulk filing GP is 30 mins away, and the wait is unbelievable. And I'm in inner Melbourne!

I live in Dandenong and at my local hospital we have had an after hours clinic for a few years now. The clinic sits on the same site as the hospital and see's people who have not had time to attend a doctor during the day or a minor emergency has emerged and does not require triage in the Emergency department. I have used this service myself on occasions when the kids have suddenly become ill and GP clinics are closed. What i can say is that it certainly does save time, prior to the after hours clinic being opened- if my kids were unwell i would have had to attend the local emergency ward. I can attest that waiting times can be improved in the emergency wards- using the after hours clinic is not only alleviates wait times in emergency departments but my children are attended to within a short and reasonable time frame.

if govt will organise more gp's into one site so overheads can be dratsically cut
the better service and avalaibiltiy willl occur naturally
the govt could rent the premises at nominal amount if the doctors bulk bill
or charge a small fee ion top
overheads are a killer in small practices

I agree, GP, should be more accountable for their patients, not leave messages on their answering machine advising patients, how much it will cost, up front, for an after hours consultation, of which the average patient cannot afford.
It would be useful to have young medics in training, at the front door, assessing the needs of each patient, and deciding on the urgency of the case, and confiring with other Drs on staff.
Don't forget we had a good Dr in Queensland, and Andrews deported him, because he could. Don't you think, this has given overseas Drs a reason to give Australia, a wide birth, and he is about to get back into government.

Having worked at Westmead Accident and Emergency as an after hours receptionist/ward clerk for Recieving room and A&E, I can tell you first hand that most of the people waiting in waiting rooms are the parents of children who wake up with a cough in the middle of the night, or the parents of children who rock up after dinner because ie: they couldn't get to the doctor during the day, or didn't want to go to the doctor because of the cost. Then you have a range of other people.

I agree that there should be After hours medical clinics to deal with the smaller issues, and that nursing/admin staff at the hospitals should be directing non urgent cases to these clinics, Rockingham Western Australia is a perfect example. However, those who wouldn't pay for a doctor during the day are not going to pay for one at night and will continue to sit in the waiting room for hours to save $30.00. So therefore a cost consideration has to be made as well. Maybe Medicare only at these clinics. I know that having a one doctor practice in city locations will not be enough for the overflow, because they will become quite busy.
